In April 2019, my friend and long-term mentor Uris Dacosta recruited me to join his new team responsible for shaping product design at GoDaddy. My role was to form a design team for mobile apps.

Fortunately, the product team wanted to redesign the GoDaddy App so we took this opportunity to set an example for designing native apps within the company. These are my contributions in upgrading the GoDaddy App from V3 to V4.

The collaboration between product, design and engineering during this time was definitely one of the highlights in my career. I'm really thankful for my colleagues for the wonderful experience, most especially to my partners Prashanti and Steve.

Focus – Two weeks after I joined, we had a kickoff where all team members flew to GoDaddy HQ. At this phase, I pretty much only have one job – to find clarity. I asked a lot of questions to help drive the conversation towards that, not just for myself, but for the entire team as well. We ended up with a very clear goal and everyone were super excited to get to work. We all agreed to focus to only three things:

Mobile Design Principles – during kickoff, I prepared a very simple deck, 10 slides with one design principle on each. It was less of a presentation, but a discussion. Everyone jumped in with their points of view. We ended up with 10 principles we all loved.

Home – since most of our users have only one website, I changed the default screen aka the 'home' screen from being list of websites into the last visited website. This allowed users to see their dashboard upon opening the the app and making it easy to access their website management tools.

Dashboard – designed a scalable system for different type of websites, from basic to online stores and appointments. This made it easier for users to review metrics they care about day to day. This also resolved inconsistencies across apps and web.

Setup, Manage, Add – reorganized all website management tools (previously displayed as cards) into clear distinct areas based on top user needs. This made it clear where to set up a component and where to manage them. We also made it easier for users to access most used actions i.e. adding a post or photo.

Domains – a lot of users really love the ability to search domains in the old version, so we kept this feature and made the experience snappier.

Welcome Screen – I made two concepts for our welcome screen. First option: "what we're about", focused on brand. Second: "what you can do", focused on tools.

Launched 4.0 – We launched the app in September 2019. Roughly 5 months since started. Despite the small team and tight deadline, our engineering team was bold enough to rewrite the entire codebase from React Native to Swift, and Kotlin (android soon followed).

Android – the android version was released in October (one month later). Keeping our principle of designing platform agnostic interfaces and only customizing where it make sense, the iOS and Android version pretty much look the same, just subtle modification to match the OS.
